Coming of Age
I have been feeling a little different lately about my work. The title "programmer" doesn't feel weird anymore, and I don't get the sudden urge to correct someone when they call me that. I would often say "oh I'm not really a programmer I just like learning stuff". Well it seems all I've been learning for the last 10 years is about computers -so I give up, I am a programmer.
Now it might be a bit controversial, me calling myself a "programmer", given I've only been doing web development for the last few years, the capacity in which most people know me; but I still see myself as pretty old school. The first thing I learnt about computers was how to install windows 3.11 from DOS. I had all the commands written down and everything, in. specifc. order.
Pretty soon after that I was hacking out little games in QBasic, then C, then Java, then C++ and so on and so on. Some of my most significant contributions to date have been business software -the kind that big companies use -the boring kind.
I am looking forward to doing some more exciting things in the near future. Game development comes to mind. I am also pretty excited about the new possibilities with HTML 5 and canvas. And even more exciting -the mobile platforms: android, iphone, blackberry, webOS.
I can't wait to come of age.
